cv/statement

I grew up on a farm in New Jersey, studied theatrical design at Rutgers University, and worked for ten years in the theatre and film industry in Seattle, Washington before moving to Vermont where I began my fine art practice painting in oil. During a month-long residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2011, I returned to working in 3D making “sculptural paintings” which led to making sculpture.

I approach fine art as an ongoing experiment with media and content, regardless of subject, embracing tradition while continuously seeking materials and methods suited to the current vocabulary of my form language. Each work begins with a ’what if’ such as; what would happen if this media was used this way, these materials were joined, or I followed this path to communicate this idea.

My work explores phenomena at the edges of the known, such as in the paper sculpture series titled Evil Divided By Good which asks the hypothetical question “How many acts of goodness does it take to counteract one act of evil?”, or the metal and lucite Conversation series exploring verbal relationships. At times my work takes a scientific turn, such as in the piece Sowing Good Will, about fractals and infinite scale, and Brainstorm which explores the dynamics of soliton waves.

Among the honors I’ve received are two Vermont Arts Endowment Awards for new work, funding the creation of the large paper sculpture Sowing Good Will and a series of unconventional landscape paintings titled Vermont Landscape Through Time, and grants from the Vermont Arts Council and the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation. Notable press includes reviews in Sculpture magazine and So Vermont Arts Living on the installation Change Your Mind at the Brattleboro Museum, and articles in Art New England, Northern Woodlands, New Hampshire Home, and New England Home.
