The design of the piece has it’s roots in the river. The title is A History of Water. My inspiration is water from many viewpoints. The painted blue river in the piece is based on the topography of the Connecticut and Ompompanoosuc River confluence, but there are also references of a view into mountains that feed the river, the surface of a pond, clouds, droplets hanging, falling, and held in suspension, ripples, waves, and the abundance of life that springs from a body of water, it’s reflective quality as well as depth.

Leonardo da Vinci spent much of his life contemplating water, where it came from, how it moves, and it’s potential for power as well as destruction. At one point he envisioned water moving through the earth much like a heart pumps blood through the body, with the heart of the earth pumping water to the mountain streams, until he began to take into account the formation of clouds and speculated that evaporation was a key to the movement of water. He sought an explanation as to why sea fossils could be found on the tops of mountains. I tell you this to illustrate the mystery that has surrounded the element of water from ancient times and even up until today when the oceans still hold a wealth of the mystery of earth. These are thoughts that go through my mind during the creative process and are encapsulated in this piece.
